What KHIE Does

KHIE connects healthcare organizations across the Commonwealth so that patient information is available when and where it is needed most. This helps providers make better decisions, reduce duplicate testing, and deliver more coordinated care.

Through KHIE, authorized users can securely access:

  • Patient health histories
  • Laboratory results
  • Medication information
  • Hospital and clinical visit data
  • Public health reporting information

By bringing this information together, KHIE supports a more complete, real-time view of a patient’s health.

How KHIE Benefits You
For Patients

  • Reduced need to repeat tests or provide the same information multiple times
  • Safer, more coordinated care across different providers and locations
For Providers
  • Faster access to critical patient information
  • Improved clinical decision-making
  • Enhanced care coordination and patient outcomes
For Public Health
  • Better data to monitor health trends and respond to public health needs

KHIE in Action: Connecting Healthcare Across Kentucky

Since migrating to the new KHIE Portal in March 2026, KHIE continues to see increased adoption and utilization. Currently, KHIE has 731 provider users and more than 67 million messages coming in.

Powering Public Health

KHIE helps connect healthcare providers, hospitals, laboratories, and public health agencies across the Commonwealth. Through KHIE, participating organizations can efficiently share critical health information that supports public health monitoring, disease prevention, and community health improvement efforts.

Since March 2026, KHIE has supported the submission of:

  • 926,032 immunization reports
  • 3,084,099 electronic lab reports
  • 35,429,748 syndromic surveillance reports
  • 3,173,089 electronic case reports

Real-Time Event Notifications Support Better Care Coordination

KHIE’s Event Notification Service delivers real-time alerts through the KHIE Portal when a patient visits an emergency department, is admitted to a hospital, or is discharged from inpatient care.

Since March 2026, more than 2.5 million event notifications have been delivered to care teams across Kentucky.

Your Role in Strengthening KHIE

KHIE is only as strong as the data that flows through it. By sharing data with KHIE and maintaining accurate patient panels, participating organizations help create a more complete health record for the patients they serve.

If your organization currently receives data from KHIE but does not yet contribute data to the exchange, we encourage you to connect with the KHIE team to explore available data-sharing opportunities.

Tool Spotlight: Population Explorer

Population Explorer is a web-based tool within the KHIE Portal designed to help physicians and care teams identify, prioritize, and manage patient needs in near real time.

With Population Explorer, users can review and track patients’ latest encounters, preventive service alerts, and population health trends. The tool can help identify patients overdue for preventive screenings, monitor elevated A1c levels, and review patients with frequent emergency department utilization.

Advanced filtering allows users to create targeted patient lists using diagnosis codes, encounter types, panels, timeframes, and customizable “and/or/not” logic.

Common Population Explorer use cases include:

  • Searching for patients who visited the emergency room three or more times in the last 90 days.
  • Filtering patients by diagnosis codes.
  • Reviewing admissions or discharges within a selected timeframe.
  • Filtering by encounter type, such as Emergency, Inpatient, Outpatient, or Observation.

Access to Population Explorer is managed by each organization’s designated KHIE Admin. Users can access the tool from the KHIE Portal landing page.

Population Explorer can help identify patients who are due or overdue for preventive screenings, or who may be at increased risk from diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
