Equity and Determinants of Health Branch

Effective January 20, 2021, President Biden signed Executive Order 13985 addressing the advancement of racial equity and support for underserved communities. This branch was created within the Division of Quality and Population Health to address these concerns by strategically partnering with Managed Care Organizations (MCOs), providers, and other community partners to meet the diverse needs of all Kentucky Medicaid members.

The Equity and Determinants of Health Branch identifies and addresses barriers related to Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) that may prevent Medicaid members from fully utilizing program benefits. SDoHs are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.

SDoH are the wider set of forces and conditions shaping our daily lives. These factors are key drivers that impact health outcomes. Using the Value-Added Benefits (VABs) offered by MCOs to find extra support with things like transportation, food, utility assistance, education, medical supplies, and more is something we can do to help achieve healthcare goals.
