School Facilities

The Kentucky state school facilities program establishes and enforces uniform sanitary standards for schools necessary to ensure a safe and healthy environment. Inspections are conducted by local health department environmentalists at least twice each year with follow ups and complaint investigations as necessary.

Plan Review

Plans for new school construction and modifications to existing schools must be submitted to local health departments.

Guidelines for School Plan Submittal 

Submission Process 

  • Three sets of plumbing plans and three plan application forms are submitted to the local health department. Note: four sets of plans are required if the water source is private.
  • The local health department reviews the plans and forwards approved plans to the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (DHBC) for further review and approval.
  • Approved plans are returned to the local health department with an approval letter. Plans not approved are returned to the local health department with a deficiency letter.​
