The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, is a federal law that protects children from sexual exploitation and abuse be creating a national system to track sex offenders and standardize registration across states.
Under 922 KAR 1:490, all resource home applicants and members of their households must undergo a child abuse and neglect check in each state where they have lived within the past five years.
Adult Applicants
Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) checks for adult applicants and household members that have lived outside Kentucky within the past five years must be submitted through the Kentucky Applicant Registry and Employment Screening (KARES) application.
Once an individual is entered into KARES, staff responsible for processing out-of-state checks will contact you with the appropriate forms and instructions for completing the Adam Walsh check for each applicable state of prior residence.
Adolescent Applicants
Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) checks for adolescents that have resided outside of Kentucky within the past five years must be submitted to Records Management via email using a DPP-157 or DPP-159 form.
Once the request has been received, staff responsible for out-of-state checks will contact you with the appopriate forms and instructions for completing the Adam Walsh check for each applicable state of prior residence.
Out of State Agencies
Out of state agencies seeking to complete an Adam Walsh check for an individual who previously resided in Kentucky must submit this check through the CAN and Adam Walsh Verification application, which is accessed through the Kentucky Online Gateway (KOG) portal. On this portal you will need to either log in to your account if you have previously created one or click "Create New Account" to create the account.
