Safe Sleep

Infant safe sleep is critically important because it significantly reduces the risk of sleep-related injuries and deaths, including sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). Placing babies on their backs to sleep, using a firm mattress, and keeping the sleep area free of loose blankets, pillows, and toys help ensure that an infant's airway remains clear and unobstructed. By consistently following evidence-based safe sleep guidelines, caregivers create a safer environment that protects infants during their most delicate stages of growth and provides families with peace of mind.

The Kentucky Child Fatality Review reported the leading cause of death for children aged 0-17 in 2023 was sudden unexpected infant death (SUID)

The chart from the 2024 Child Fatality Review Annual Report depicts the leading causes of death among children 0-17 in Kentucky. 17.9% of deaths resulted from SUID, surpassing other causes of death such as, Possible pre-term birth, disease, congenital malformations, motor vehicle and homicide. Picture1.png
