Adoption Support
The Special Needs Adoption Program (SNAP) offers a number of support services to assist families who adopt a special needs child.
Such services include financial assistance including a one-time reimbursement for nonrecurring adoption expenses in addition to a monthly maintenance payment with an amount dependent on the specific needs of the child.
A Kentucky medical assistance card is generally available with extraordinary medical expenses reimbursable when it is incurred as a result of the child’s “special needs.”
Parents adopting a special needs child are also eligible for respite care services should they need it as well as counsel from DCBS adoption specialists concerning issues that might arise before and after the adoption.
Families are invited to join adoption support groups that meet throughout the state or may be connected by DCBS staff to experienced adoptive parents through an adoption support network.
In addition, parents are offered the opportunity to attend trainings and conferences to enhance their knowledge concerning the special needs of their child.
For more information concerning these or other support services, please contact the Special Needs Adoption Program at (800) 928-4303.
