Employee of the Month
for May 2006:
Augel Coutee

In April 2006, CCSHCN sponsored a Drug Endangered Child training.  This began as something small and simple. The Western Region Manager, Judy McCrackin, requested that the Hopkinsville office assist with the organization and registration of this event.  As time went by, the event went statewide with satellite sites set up at approximately 22 different sites. Along with this statewide invitation came the responsibility of registering each person and placing them at a site.

Augel stepped up to the plate and took on the responsibility of statewide registration as well as completing her duties in a timely manner. She was bombarded daily with e-mails and phone calls regarding the training and always kept her composer. This responsibility was delegated to her because she is such a dependable and organized individual. In all, she alone registered approximately 500 individuals for this training.

She compiled training materials and information for every one attending and also sent these packets to each site for the moderator to hand out as well as a registration sheet.  She was responsible for compiling surveys at the end of the training as well.  She did a WONDERFUL job.  The registration process as well as the training went off with out a hitch.

Augel is a very loyal & dependable person. She is always friendly and willing to assist in any way she can.  Her organization skills are outstanding. She is well deserving of Employee of the Month!!!

Employee of the Month
for April 2006:
Teresa Hellinger

Photo of Teresa Hellinger

The Christmas party or the "Spirit of Giving" was Teresa's original idea of how the Louisville staff could help our families. It was started more than three years ago with the help of Cub Scout Pack 48 and Brownie Troop 2118 and has grown steadily ever since. The first party was very small and consisted of only 30 families. This past year more than 200 families were assisted with food baskets, gifts or gift certificates. There were 100 Jess Tree Recipients from St. Margaret Mary's Church, 74 food baskets, two new bike raffles, one Radio Flyer wagon raffle, along with 33 hams and four turkeys. With the money raised from the annual flower sale and other cash donations from staff and outside organizations, $1,750.00 in $20.00 Wal-Mart gift certificates were purchased to give to families that were unable to attend the Christmas party in person.

Teresa's initial idea to help out the families in need at the CCSHCN has spearheaded all the ideas to raise funds for the "Spirit of Giving," including the annual flower sale, the yearlong snack sales, the idea of the "boutique" that Pat Greer started to help staff with ergonomics by using gift certificates for food instead of food baskets. Teresa has shown staff what the true meaning of Christmas is through her constant giving nature and willingness to do all of this without any recognition for herself.

March 2006

Employee of the Month
for March 2006:
Patricia Ashby

Becky Cecil, Patricia Ashby and Natasha Thomas

Patricia Ashby is the Health Program Administrator for the Louisville Hemophilia Program and has been a CCSHCN employee since October 1999. She began as a charge nurse for the CCSHCN and has worked her way up to her current position.

During her time with the CCSHCN, she has continued to pursue her academic studies and recently completed her ARNP from U of L. As the Health Program Administrator for the Louisville Hemophilia Program, she has provided clinical oversight to the hemophilia population enrolled in the CCSHCN in the Central and Western parts of the state.

Her care coordination for this population encompasses every aspect of their lives including health, education, transition, work, family and even lifestyle. Because of the high cost of care for this population, Ms. Ashby spends a major portion of her time in trying to contain these costs to a manageable range for these patients and for the CCSHCN.  Just since January, 2006, Ms. Ashby has saved the CCSHCN $255,662.00 in factor costs by working with her support staff and the manufacturers to cover these costs, therefore allowing those funds to be available to other CCSHCN clients for needed services.

It is because of going that extra mile to save the CCSHCN those funds that I feel Ms. Ashby deserves to be named the CCSHCN Employee of the Month.

Natasha Thomas from the Hemophilia Department deserves a special recognition for her work with the pharmaceutical manufacturers to get cost savings for the CCSHCN.

February 2006

Employee of the Month
for February 2006:
Sara Richardson

I would like to nominate Sara Richardson, RN Program Coordinator for the Barbourville office for Employee of the month. Sara met with her staff and helped them to select a project that they felt most needed to be worked on in their area. Together they have selected the problem of substance abuse. This is a challenging project and they are tackling it with gusto.

From the beginning, Sara has been committed to this project. She is working alone, but is certainly leading the effort. All staff members in the CCSHCN Barbourville office are participating in one way or another. They are meeting regularly with Operation Unite and the Drug Endangered Child project. Operation UNITE's focus is getting the community united to fight substance abuse.  The Drug Endangered Child project focuses more specially on methamphetamine abuse and children’s exposure to the drug, its manufacturing hazards and its toxic byproducts. Operation Unite is already established and very active in her area.  Sara and her staff members are participating in many of their activities.

Sara has met with local officials and political leaders to learn what she needed to do to get Operation Unite and the Drug Endangered Child project to join forces in their area. They had their first organizational meeting to form a local chapter of DEC and Sara has been named chairman of this group. Their next meeting will be with Operation Unite to propose, discuss, and work on joining forces.

Barbourville staff members, including Sara, were invited and attended the National Drug Endangered Child Conference in Washington and have been invited and will be attending Drug Endangered Child conference in Johnson City, Tenn., in March. Sara collaborated with the Drug Endangered Child project leaders at UK to organize, plan and present a Drug Endangered Child presentation for all CCSHCN East Region staff members.

Sara’s work on this project is in addition to performing her job as Program Coordinator and Care Coordination for orthopedic patients at the Barbourville CCSHCN clinic/office.

Employee of the Month
January, 2006:
Judy Blackwell

Photo of Judy Blackwell

Judy Blackwell has worked for the CCSHCN for over 30 years. She has weathered name changes, policy reversals and leadership shakeups. Working for any company or institution for this length of time is an accomplishment for certain but not the reason for her nomination. The reason for her nomination are numerous and varied but just to name a few:

In addition to being the "backbone" of the Lexington office and a source of unlimited information for and about our families and children, she is frequently called upon by other offices to serve as a mentor and role model for newly hired social workers.

She faces change as a challenge and works hard to meet or exceed the expectations of new programs.

She is a walking encyclopedia of other resources available to our families and makes sure this information is passed on to the people appropriate to make the connection, or makes it herself.

From Judy:  I would like to thank you for the award of the Employee of the Month for the Commission for Children With Special Health Care Needs.  I am a small part of a team that works hard every day to meet the needs of the families and patients that we serve.  Therefore, I would like to share this award with all of the staff from the Lexington office.  It is a privilege to be horned by the administrative staff, my regional manager, and my program coordinator and my peers.  May all of our efforts focus on the needs of all the patients and families that we serve.

Thank You,

Judy Blackwell, MSW

Employee of the Year 2005

2005 Employee of the Year

Charla Underwood of Hopkinsville Goes Above and Beyond to Support Children and Families in Kentucky

Eric Freidlander, Charla Underwood and Rebecca Cecil

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the recognition of Employee of the Year for the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs. I am very appreciative to take part in such a wonderful and rewarding program. My nomination for such an award could not have been viable without the support and dedication of my team members and managers. It's with the confidence of my managers that I am consistently given the chance to explore and grow as an individual, as well as develop into a more rounded advocate for families in need.

The Hopkinsville team works as one unit to provide the most comprehensive services to our families. In my eyes, we all go above and beyond for our families and the community.  Thank you for the support, dedication and passion you show daily.

Charla Underwood, SW
