Children and Family Services includes the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) and the Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CCSHCN).
DCBS provides family support, child support, child and adult protection and determines Medicaid and food stamp eligibility. The department runs the state foster care and adoption systems and recruits and trains parents to care for the state’s children who are waiting for a permanent home. DCBS has offices in every county.
CCSHCN provides medical treatment to children up to 21 years old with a variety of challenging health conditions. Patients receive case management services from nurses who work with pediatric specialists to determine a plan of treatment and ensure that every child receives appropriate, state-of-the-art medical care. Services may be free of charge or for a fee based on a sliding scale.
The commission’s main office is in Louisville and it has 16 regional offices across the state.
