2011-12 Kentucky AmeriCorps Programs

During the 2011-12 program year, which began in September 2011, Kentucky benefited from the service of more than 425 AmeriCorps members serving in one of the 12 programs listed below.

Program Sponsor: Barren County School District

Description: Members served elementary through high school students in partnership with supportive schools and involved communities to provide tutoring and mentoring assistance to aid in the prevention of student dropouts and support post-secondary education and workforce readiness.

Build Corps

Program Sponsor: Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky

Description: A statewide program in which members counseled low-income families/individuals, assisting them in attaining permanent and/or transitional housing. Members also served as construction assistants at non-profit agencies, rehabilitating and building housing in low-income communities.

Economic Empowerment Corps

Program Sponsor: Kentucky Domestic Violence Association

Description: A statewide program in which members served as economic empowerment specialists, volunteer and community outreach specialists and youth programming specialists serving those who are survivors of domestic violence.

EKU Corps

Program Sponsor: Eastern Kentucky University

Description: Members provided dropout prevention literacy tutoring, environmental education and opportunities for job training and certification programs for at-risk students.

FRYSC Corps

Program Sponsor: Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative

Description: Members, serving under the supervision of Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) coordinators, provided reading tutoring for academically at-risk students.

Kentucky College Coaches

Program Sponsor: Northern Kentucky University

Description: Members served as college coaches in statewide program designed to increase the number of low-income and underserved students who graduate from high school, enroll in postsecondary institutions and earn a college degree.

Kentucky Service Corps

Program Sponsor: Northern Kentucky University

Description: Members were committed college students and citizens mobilizing to provide critical service to nonprofits, schools, local and state government agencies across the Commonwealth.
